Nationalism in Music: The Mighty Handful of Russia Listing

from Cleveland Institute of Music

Program image

The idea of nationalism is certainly nothing new. But how can it be
expressed through music?

In “The Mighty Handful,” participants will explore the works of five
Russian composers who worked together to express their nationalistic pride
through their music. Their goal was to write distinctly Russian sounding
music—music of the people, not the socially elite. Participants will recognize
elements of music that create nationalistic sounds and will be able to identify
Russian sounding compositional devices in the music of these five composers.
